Modern world has recognized the value of sports and games. A school curriculum is incomplete without sports and games. "A sound mind in a sound body" is a well known maxim. Sports are essential for the development of a healthy body. Sports also develop certain qualities like discipline, courage, leadership qualities", etc. As we all known "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy".
In the past sports and games were not given much importance in the educational sphere. Today educationists have discovered usefulness in sports and games from the point of education and hence they are called co-curricular activities.
Sports and games develop discipline. It encourages large-heartedness, generosity, tolerance and spirit of "give and take". A sportsman can take his defeat on the chin. He is not sensitive or fussy about it. He knows the strong points of his adversary and is bold and fearless in meeting unexpected troubles in the journey of life. A true sportsman is unmindful of victory or defeat. He seldom loses balance of mind.
International sports are beyond race, religion and nationality. They develop universal brotherhood. Modern Olympics have promoted international sports. The important thing in the Olympics is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.
People of different national come together during international sports. They learn to respect each other. It encourages in us the development of team spirit and the spirit of co-operation. Sportsmen as member of team cultivate the virtue of fighting not for their own glory but for the glory of the team. People learn to appreciate other's talents. A very fine example for sportsmanship is that of Jesse Owen and Luz Long during the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Luz Long of Germany helped Jesses Owens, a Negro of USA to achieve the Olympic gold. Sports and games played at the international level contribute to the creation of unity and amity among the various nations of the world.
